Batik is a very ancient form of fabric decoration, originating in the Far East. It is a wax resist process; the designs are created with alternate applications of hot wax and dye. Sarah Hale is on e of the few Canadian artists specializing in Batik as a landscape medium, and she has found the process uniquely suited to capturing the colours and textures of the rocky terrain around the Village of Arden. All of Sarah's original works are drawn freehand with melted wax on cotton and other natural fabrics. In Sarah's studio and gallery, you can watch her Batiking and see work in progress.
You can also choose from a good selection of her landscapes, or pick up a Batiked name card or a variety of original or reproduction cards. Also available are gifts from Ontario and around the world. Workshops in Batik can be arranged for individuals or groups.

BIOGRAPHY ON SARAH
Sarah Hale was born and educated in the state of Maine, taking art courses at Colby College and also at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. She came to Toronto to work in a theatre company, married, became a Canadian citizen, and moved to the little village of Arden where she still lives. Although Sarah was first exposed to Batik during a year in Japan, it was in Arden, at an informal workshop, that she tried it for herself and began to see the exciting potential of the medium. For the past thirty years, Sarah has used the batik medium to celebrate the rocky, irregular landscape of the Canadian Shield, and has enjoyed combining a traditional Far Eastern art form with the rich Canadian landscape painting tradition.

This degree included an exhibit entitled “The Tree of Life: Quilted Batiks” at the Lookout Gallery, Regent College, April 7-20, 2004. At the Regent Convocation that year, Sarah won both the Board of Governors’ Prize for Proficiency in the MCS Program and the Christianity and the Arts Prize for her thesis exhibit.
